This was my third attempt at a painted accent wall, and as I’ve shared before, it’s a really great, cheaper option to wallpaper! (Even the peel and stick kind can get pretty pricey!) This was the first one that I used a stencil for, rather than just freehanding the whole thing! Her room is on the smaller side, and with a queen bed taking up a lot of it, we opted to leave the closet open and I love how the painted accent wall makes the space pop!
I usually find a wallpaper or idea that I like first, and then figure out the beat plan of attack for the pattern!! I wanted the larger polka dots to be approximately the same size, so I cut out a circle in cardboard and used that as a stencil!! I sort of had to smooth the edges when I pulled the cardboard away, in order for the paint to not pool around the edges, but it ended up giving it more of the hand painted/water color look that I was going for anyway!! Once I felt like I had enough large dots, I free handed some smaller ones to fill the space a little more evenly!
I started with the same color paint as Taylor’s walls, and since we had already put a fresh coat of white inside her closet, I didn’t have to do anymore prep work before starting!! Benjamin Moore Pink Essence is a very light shade, so I started with that and added spoonfuls of red as I went, so that the polka dots would vary in color while still being a similar shade!!
And then just when I thought I was done….. girlfriend demanded Minnie Mouse walls 🤣🤣. No offense to anyone who’s kids have character rooms — I mean really, whatever gets them to sleep in there, right?!? But I tend to keep the characters in more subtle accents, so I scoured the internet for some decals that would work! And low and behold…. found some solid pink Minnie heads on Amazon that fit in perfectly!! Little Miss helped me add an accent to the accent wall, and I love how it came out!!
